Starting out
Qualification
The qualification to strive for depends on the career path you want to pursue. If you are going down the private practice accountancy route you would tend to start with the AAT qualification, this leading to numerous exemptions from the exams required to become a fully qualified accountant (ACA or ACCA). If you are considering tax as a career path then you should look at taking the ATT exams first, this leading on to the more onerous CTA exams and qualification. Working as a management accountant in industry you should consider the CIMA qualification as that is geared to this career path. At Clay GBP we support AAT, ATT, ACA, ACCA and CTA training & qualification.
The Process
1
Once you understand the basics and shown the desire & skills needed, there will normally be the opportunity to progress through to more complex accountancy or tax work, this often-involving working within the different departments to expand your experiences as far as possible.
3
Having trained & qualified at Clay GBP we would hope that you would want to stay with us and take up a managerial role when the time is right for both you and us.
Starting out as an apprentice in either our bookkeeping, business management or tax departments, you will development the basic skills needed to undertake your day-to-day role in the company, training for the AAT or ATT qualification.
2
Having passed your AAT or ATT exams hopefully you would want to progress onto the harder ACA, ACCA or CTA exams, enabling you to call yourself a chartered accountant or chartered tax advisor. By this stage we would expect you to be moving towards a more supervisory role.

What Our People Say
Amelia Tompkin – Accounts Supervisor
“I joined Clay GBP as an Accounts Associate back in August 2020, after graduating from the University of Plymouth with a First in BA Accounting and Finance. Over the course of the next year or so I played an important role in the growing accounts team. My main tasks were to prepare both company accounts and corporation tax returns, as well as sole trade accounts. After a few months I then started my journey to become a Chartered Accountant with the ICAEW. As there are a range of exams covering different areas of accountancy and tax, I was given the opportunity to take on responsibilities in the tax team which included the preparation of personal tax returns and more advanced corporate tax for group companies.
In April 2022 I was promoted to Senior Accounts Associate, which was then quickly followed by another promotion in October 2022 to Accounts Supervisor. In this role I manage the teams’ workflow and review accounts, corporation tax returns and VAT returns. But one of the most exciting aspects of the role is that I have started to build my own portfolio of clients, which is putting me in good stead to look towards becoming a manager in the near future.”
Emmanuel Lindsay
“My name is Emmanuel Lindsay. I joined Clay GBP just over 6 months ago now. I had previously studied my AAT level 2 with a traineeship group known as LTSB. Before joining Clay GBP, I had no experience of working within the finance sector but when I arrived at Clay GBP I was greeted with a warm embrace and made to feel a part of the team here straight away.
I’ve been given a lot of support during my time here to help me to learn and grow further. I’m very excited to soon be starting my studies alongside my work and have faith I will succeed in my endeavour no matter how challenging it may be with the support of my team and experienced colleagues helping me.”
